guttertwinsThe Gutter Twins are Greg Dulli (The Twilight Singers, the Afghan Whigs) and Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees), described by Dulli as a “satanic Everly Brothers.” As befitting a satanic Everly Brothers, there are harmonies, but gruff sounding, slightly menacing ones, with heavy, slow burning guitar based rock behind them. I’m a bigger Dulli fan than I am a Lanegan fan, so I tended to like the songs where Dulli took lead vocals, but they really do sound good together. The pairing doesn’t yield as much indie rock and roll supergroup sparks as I had hoped it would, but it’s a pretty solid album, anyway, with some of the songs making a greater impression with repeated listens. Standout cuts: “God’s Children,” “Idle Hands,” “Each To Each” and “Front Street.”
