The Hush Sound – The Goodbye Blues
April 7, 2008
Appealing, entertaining album from Illinois based band the Hush Sound, done in a sunny, jazzy California pop rock style that recalls bands like Rooney and Phantom Planet. Their music is bolstered considerably by Greta Salpeter’s vocals and piano playing, the latter of which fuels a good number of the songs, and by Robert Morris, who splits vocal duties with Salpeter and plays guitar. In fact, Morris is so good, I was wishing he’d have had the chance to sing more songs. Nevertheless, this is engaging, assured stuff, and that a band this young already has such pop smarts bodes well for future releases. Standout cuts: “Honey,” “Medicine Man,” “Hurricane” and “As You Cry.”
